Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

The start of 2026 brings crucial deadlines for individual taxpayers, focusing on estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and comprehensive tax planning. It’s vital to stay informed about these deadlines to ensure compliance and effective financial management.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Appointment -

The early part of the year marks the beginning of tax season. To avoid the rush and ensure a seamless process, we recommend scheduling your tax preparation appointment well in advance. This proactive approach is key, especially as schedules fill up quickly.

January 12 - Tip Reporting Deadline -

If you’re an employee who regularly receives tips and have accumulated over $20 in tips during December, you must report these to your employer by January 12. You can use IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement with your signature; name, address, and Social Security number; along with your employer's or establishment's name and address; the reporting month or period, and total tips received.

Your employer will withhold FICA and income taxes from your regular wages. If withholding from wages is insufficient, the uncollected amount will appear in box 8 of your W-2. You'll need to settle this when filing your tax return.

January 15 - Deadline for 4th Quarter Estimated Taxes -

This date is crucial for making your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year. Missing this deadline means you must file your 2025 tax return and pay any taxes owed by February 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.

Weekends & Holidays:

If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically shifts to the next business day that is not a holiday.
