Key December Tax Deadlines for Individuals in 2025

This month’s tax checklist encompasses essential year-end strategies, including tip reporting, IRA withdrawals, and settling deductible expenses for 2025.

December 1 - Initiate Year-End Tax Strategies

As the year draws to a close, it’s pivotal to finalize any tax actions that could significantly impact your 2025 taxes. Individuals anticipating significant income variations, changes in marital or dependent status, and those involved in property sales should schedule a tax planning session promptly.

December 10 - Deadline for Tips Reporting

If you earned more than $20 in tips during November, you must report these to your employer on IRS Form 4070 by December 10. Employers are mandated to withhold relevant FICA and income taxes from your regular wages. Should your wages fall short to cover these withholdings, the unfulfilled taxes will appear in box 8 of your W-2. You’ll be responsible for the payment upon filing your return.

December 31 - Final Day for IRA Distributions

Today marks the deadline for mandatory withdrawals from Traditional IRA accounts for individuals born before January 1, 1952. However, if your birth falls between January 1 and December 31, 1952, and you turned 73 in 2025, you can defer your first required distribution to April 1, 2026. Ensure arrangements are made if your IRA institution is closed on the 31st.

December 31 - Cutoff for Deductible Expenses

Today is also the final opportunity to pay deductible expenses for the 2025 tax return, excluding IRA, SEP, or Keogh contributions, which are permissible after year-end.

Important Year-End Considerations:
Given that some actions require processing time or the availability of institutions, it's recommended to take action before year-end to avoid complications if financial institutions are closed on December 31.

Weekend & Holiday Adjustments:
If a deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically shifts to the next business day.

Extension for Disaster Areas:
Tax deadlines are extended for regions declared as disaster areas. For more information, visit FEMA or the IRS site.
